Depends m8 , you can get more lift from 8 motors hence the weight so there shouldnt be much of a penalty , plus if it is matched right then you will get longer flight times because you can add more batts to take it up to its ideal weight.
From what ive read so far though Quad and Hex are the most efficient , the oct and y6 etc etc are just better for redundancy eg you can lose a motor or 2 on that octo and still land safely.
